Violet Carson (1 September 1898 – 26 December 1983) was an English actress most well-known for her portrayal of Ena Sharples in Coronation Street. She learned the piano as a child, forming the Carson Sisters with her sister Nellie and as a teenager became a cinema pianist accompanying silent films. From 1935 she began a career in radio, singing a wide range of songs in the show Songs at the Piano and then appeared in Children’s Hour, acted in radio dramas and even become a presenter and interviewer on Woman’s Hour. From 1960 to 1980 she appeared as the belligerent old woman Ena Sharples in Coronation Street, noted for her hairnet and sharp tongue, often seen drinking milk stout in The Rovers Return, putting the world to rights.
