John Wisden

0905 NPG 5 John Wisden

John Wisden (5 September 1826 – 5 April 1884) was an all-round cricketer who played mainly for the county of Sussex from the mid-1840s and was part of a then famous All-England eleven. He developed business interests alongside his playing career, running at times a cricket-equipment shop, a cricket and cigar shop, teaching cricket at Harrow School and even owning a public house called The Cricketers. He is now best remembered for launching the Wisden Cricketers’ Almanac in 1864 after retiring from cricket, introducing during the decade all the first-class scores, the births and deaths of cricketers and descriptions of matches. It has become the bible for the sport.
