Alfie Bass (10 April 1916 – 15 July 1987) was an actor. His acting career began just before the war and whilst working as a despatch rider he featured in Ministry of Information and army film unit documentaries. After the war his theatre work included Shakespearean roles, as the Ghost in Bespoke Overcoat (1953) and milkman Tevye in the successful musical Fiddler on the Roof (1968). In films he often played happy Cockney Jews and had roles as Shorty in Lavender Hill Mob (1951) and appeared in the Beatles’ Help (1965), Alfie (1966) and Moonraker,(1979). His television work as Private Boots’ Bisley in The Army Game (1957-60) and spin-off Bootsie and Snudge (1960-3) made Bass into a household name.
